Chapter #2204 (formerly #2171) Organized as the American Wheels chapter, the original 46 charter members soon learned that the name was turned down by HD because of the wheel being central in the HOG logo, and that the chapter name had to include the name of the dealership and/or the town where it was located. So in the fall of 1988, Ann Arbor American HOG Chapter 2171 was born. The chapter, along with the Ladies of Harley (LOH) group, supports various charities within and outside Washtenaw County. The chapter’s first such activity was a Food Drive & Dance in November 1989 in cooperation with a food drive sponsored by a radio station in Ann Arbor. This Food Drive & Dance slowly evolved into our present Winter Party. Chapter sponsored activities have grown from a single poker run in June 1990 to AMA sanctioned runs, group riding seminars, day-rides after monthly chapter meetings, weeknight dinner and dessert rides, cider runs and color tours to name a few. There has been and continues to be various chapter parties such as the Volunteer Party, mid-winter pot lucks, summer party, pig roasts, Halloween parties and hay rides. Overnight and weekend trips have increased in Michigan as well as other states including Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and New York. Amidst all the changes in the Ann Arbor American chapter over the years, the leadership has kept safety in the forefront. We have several members who are Motorcycle Safety Foundation and Rider’s Edge® coaches, as well as members who are certified First Aid and CPR instructors. Every year we have an increased number of members who attend the Bystander Assistance Program since it first was made available in October 2002. In Dec 2006, after 43 years in the motorcycle business, Roy Nicholson turned over the operations of the Ann Arbor American and Brighton dealerships to Charlie Stephenson. In May 2007, our chapter number was changed to #2204 to reflect new ownership of the Ann Arbor American dealership. As you can tell, we are a HOG chapter of givers (charities), sharers (organizing an event), and motorcyclists who like to have fun. So, if you are looking to get involved, just check out the Calendar of Events to see how you can become part of our chapter history. Ride Safe and Have Fun!
